🪪 My Number Driver's License Launches!

From March 24, 2025 — online renewal courses & one-stop address changes

What's Changing?

The system records your license data onto your My Number Card's IC chip, merging them into one card. You choose from three options — conventional license only, My Number license only, or both — and enrollment is optional. With a My Number license, "excellent" and "general" drivers can take renewal courses online via smartphone or PC, and address changes after moving finish just by notifying your city office. However, the eyesight test and photo at renewal still require a visit to a license center or police station.

👥 Who's Affected?

  • Foreigners holding a Japanese driver's license
  • Foreign residents who have a My Number Card
  • Those with an upcoming license renewal
  • Anyone needing an address change after moving

🌏 Impact on Foreigners

For those anxious about in-person courses in Japanese, online renewal courses let you watch videos from home, easing the burden. One card serves as both ID and license, and address changes finish at the city office alone — handy for students and trainees who move often. Renewal costs just ¥2,100 with a My Number license only, though you still must visit a counter for the eyesight test.

💡 Key Points to Know

1Enrollment is optional — you can keep only your conventional license
2Online renewal courses are only for "excellent" and "general" driver courses; violators and first-time renewers are excluded
3Renewal fees: ¥2,100 (My Number only), ¥2,850 (conventional only), ¥2,950 (both)
4One-stop address change is only for holders of the My Number license alone, not dual holders
5A conventional license can be handier when taking it abroad or getting an international permit
6If you lose your My Number Card you also lose license verification, so store it carefully
