From March 24, 2025 — online renewal courses & one-stop address changes
The system records your license data onto your My Number Card's IC chip, merging them into one card. You choose from three options — conventional license only, My Number license only, or both — and enrollment is optional. With a My Number license, "excellent" and "general" drivers can take renewal courses online via smartphone or PC, and address changes after moving finish just by notifying your city office. However, the eyesight test and photo at renewal still require a visit to a license center or police station.
For those anxious about in-person courses in Japanese, online renewal courses let you watch videos from home, easing the burden. One card serves as both ID and license, and address changes finish at the city office alone — handy for students and trainees who move often. Renewal costs just ¥2,100 with a My Number license only, though you still must visit a counter for the eyesight test.
